Leaving the intersection with Nevada 163/Laughlin Highway, this mileage sign (for Searchlight - 19 miles and Las Vegas - 75 miles) is posted along U.S. 95 north. Photo taken 04/01/06. |
At the time this photo was taken, U.S. 95 carried only two lanes (one in each direction). By 2010, U.S. 95 had been widened to four lanes (two in each direction) between Nevada 163 and U.S. 93 near Railroad Pass. The highway has a median barrier in the rural segments and a center turn lane through Cal-Nev-Ari and Searchlight. Photo taken 04/01/06. |

This upcoming exits mileage sign provides the distance to Exit 77, Junction Business U.S. 95/Rancho Drive; Exit 78, Valley View Boulevard; and Exit 79, Decatur Boulevard. The original porcelain enamel sign was replaced when the freeway was converted from six lanes to ten overall lanes (eight all purpose and two HOV lanes). Photos taken 03/29/08 and 10/19/04. |
Business U.S. 95 follows Rancho Drive northwest seven miles from Exit 77 to Exit 90A. The surface arterial serves North Las Vegas Airport between Cary Avenue and Cheyenne Street (Nevada 574). Intersecting U.S. 95 next otherwise is Valley View Boulevard, a north-south street linking the freeway with Washington Avenue and Alta Drive. Photo taken 03/29/08. |
The reconstruction of U.S. 95 between Interstate 15 and Business U.S. 95 resulted in a dual freeway concept, with the mainline carrying four lanes of northbound traffic, and the collector-distributor lanes carrying three lanes of traffic. The c/d lanes offer a separate exit to Business U.S. 95 for northbound traffic. Photo taken 03/29/08. |
In the dual freeway concept, northbound U.S. 95 reaches Exit 77, Junction Business U.S. 95/Rancho Drive. The exit to the business route from the collector-distributor lanes is also visible from the main lanes. The second photo shows the original configuration. Photos taken 03/29/08 and 10/19/04. |

The next three exits along U.S. 95 north are Exit 78, Valley View Boulevard; Exit 79, Decatur Boulevard; and Exit 80, Jones Boulevard. Photo taken 03/29/08. |
Northbound U.S. 95 reaches Exit 78, Valley View Boulevard. The left six lanes (including HOV lane) continue north on U.S. 95; the right lane exits only to Valley View Boulevard. Valley View Boulevard travels south from U.S. 95 to Meadows Mall, about 1.2 miles from at the intersection with Nevada 159 (Charleston Boulevard). Valley View then continues south to meet Nevada 589 (Sahara Avenue) and leaves the Las Vegas city limits about 2.2 miles south of here. Photo taken 03/29/08. |
U.S. 95 prepares to pass under the Valley View Boulevard overpass. The next exit along U.S. 95 north is Exit 79, Decatur Boulevard. Decatur Boulevard is a north-south arterial between Nevada 593 (Tropicana Avenue) and Business U.S. 95 and Nevada 599/Rancho Drive. Photos taken 03/29/08 and 10/19/04. |

These overhead guide signs are attached to the Torrey Pines Drive overpass ahead of Exits 81A-B. Construction of the interchange between U.S. 95, Rainbow Boulevard, and Summerlin Parkway was completed in August of 2005. The work involved the building of a new ramp from Summerlin Parkway east onto U.S. 95 north, and improvements to existing ramps and bridges to reduce congestion and allow for the ten-lane widening of the freeway below. Photo taken 03/29/08. |
A two-lane off-ramp carries travelers onto Summerlin Parkway westbound via Exit 81A. Summerlin Parkway is a freeway that links U.S. 95 with the Las Vegas Beltway (Clark County 215), a distance of six miles. The freeway provides four interchanges for west Las Vegas and Summerlin. Rainbow Boulevard (Nevada 595) meanwhile parallels U.S. 95 northbound from Washington Avenue to Craig Road. Photo taken 03/29/08. |
As U.S. 95 curves from west to north, the two-lane exit for Summerlin Parkway departs. The left lane remains restricted to HOVs, and the right lane prepares to exit onto Exit 81B, Rainbow Boulevard. Photo taken 03/29/08. |
Immediately thereafter, northbound U.S. 95/Oran K. Gragson Highway reaches Exit 81B, Nevada 595/Rainbow Boulevard. Nevada 595 travels south from this interchange through the city of Las Vegas (Nevada 589/Sahara Avenue) into unincorporated Clark County. After intersecting the Bruce Woodbury Las Vegas Beltway, Nevada 595 ends at Neavda 160/Blue Mountain Road. Photo taken 03/29/08. |

Northbound U.S. 95 meets Nevada 373 at Amargosa Valley east of Death Valley National Park. Photos taken 11/11/08 and 01/20/02. |
Some distance ahead, U.S. 95 enters the unincorporated town of Beatty, elevation 3,300 feet above sea level. The population of Beatty was 1,154 as of the 2000 Census. Settled by 1905, Beatty has its origins in mining like many towns in western Nevada. The nearby mining towns of Rhyolite and Bullfrog west of Beatty experienced the boom-and-bust cycle associated with gold mining. Only Beatty retains a population today due to its location on U.S. 95 and more recent increase in tourism (Gateway to Death Valley) and military activity (the nearby Nevada Test Site is a large military reservation that encompasses a significant portion of Nye County and includes the controversial Yucca Mountain project). Ahead, U.S. 95 north approaches Nevada 374/Main Street in downtown Beatty. Photo taken 11/11/08. |
Nevada 374 travels southwest from Beatty into Death Valley National Park via Rhyolite and Bullfrog. Once in the national park, Nevada 374 connects to California 190 en route to Stovepipe Wells and Lone Pine in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Photo taken 11/11/08. |

Approaching Blair Junction, U.S. 6 west and U.S. 95 north meet Nevada 265/Nivloc Road south to Silver Peak. Nevada 265 travels south to Silver Peak, an unincorporated town with a history steeped in silver and gold mining in the 19th century and today is adjacent to a lithium extraction facility in nearby Clayton Valley. Nevada 265 is not a through state route; it ends upon reaching Silver Peak. Photos taken 11/11/08. |
Several miles west of Nevada 265, U.S. 6 and U.S. 95 prepare to split at Coaldale Junction. This dramatic view shows the Columbus Salt Marsh, a huge dry lakebed located to the northwest of Coaldale that is mostly devoid of vegetation. The lakebed is the low point in the valley, and whatever precipitation runoff from neighboring mountains travels toward the lake. Due to the arid climate in the Great Basin, rainfall is uncommon, and thus the lakebed is mostly dry. Photo taken 11/11/08. |
The routes divide at Coaldale Junction. As the highway turnsn from west to northwest, U.S. 6 will turn left to travel west toward Basalt, Montgomery Pass, Benton, and Bishop along the Grand Army of the Republic Highway. U.S. 95, meanwhile, curves to the north en route to Hawthorne and Fallon. Photo taken 11/11/08. |
A U.S. 6 and U.S. 95 trailblazer shield assembly is posted at the split. Turn left here for U.S. 6 west to Bishop or continue straight ahead for U.S. 95 north to Hawthorne and Fallon. Photo taken 11/11/08. |

A mileage sign provides the distance to several destinations via U.S. 95 north: Mina (31 miles), Hawthorne (63 miles), and Reno (196 miles via U.S. 95A north to either U.S. 50 west to U.S. 395 north or Interstate 80 west at Fernley). Omitted are distances to other northern Nevada locations on or near the U.S. 95 corridor such as Fallon, Fernley-Wadsworth, Yerington, and Carson City. Photo taken 11/11/08. |

In rural parts of Nevada, fences may or may not be used to contain wildlife and ranch animals. As a result, after crossing a cattle guard, it is not uncommon for animals to cross the highway. If there are no fences on the sides of the road, then assume that animals may freely cross the highway at any time. This would be especially important for nighttime driving on remote rural highways. Photo taken 11/11/08. |
As an added safety measure, motorists are required to use their headlights during the daytime to increase visibility for the next 61 miles (almost all the way to Hawthorne). Photo taken 11/11/08. |
