The Biggs Rapids (Sam Hill Memorial) Bridge rises above the Columbia River, carrying U.S. 97 from Oregon north into Washington. 08/03/11
Within the state of Oregon, U.S. 97 constitutes the main north-south route east of the Cascade Range. The US highway travels through a dry landscape due to the rain shadow of the peaks to the west. From the state with California northward, U.S. 97 serves Klamath Falls, the Crater Lake area, and Chemult in south-central Oregon. Oregon 58 carries motorists northwest from U.S. 97 to the Eugene and Portland areas near Crescent while U.S. 97 continues north to Bend, Redmond, Madras, and Moro. A child route, U.S. 197, provides the main route between U.S. 97 and The Dalles.
