Forming a 340 mile long multi-state route with Maine 16, New Hampshire Route 16 travels north from Portsmouth to Dover, Rochester, Milton, Ossipee, Conway, Gorham and Errol to cross the state line at Wentworth Location. The route extends east to Rangeley and ultimately Orono, Maine. Origins of the route date back to the 1922 establishment of New England Interstate Route 16, with NH 16 overtaking that route north from Portsmouth to NH 26 at Errol.
A change made to NH 16 by the 1990s rerouted the southern extent between Dover and Rochester onto the tolled Spaulding Turnpike. The portion south from Dover to Portsmouth is also the eastern extent of U.S. 4. Before the turnpike was completed there in 1956, U.S. 4/NH 16 took Woodbury Avenue southward into Portsmouth.
