
North Carolina Highway 86 forms a multi state route with Virginia Route 86 north from Chapel Hill to the state line at Danville. NC 86 originates at the interchange joining U.S. 15/501 and NC 54 along the Chapel Hill bypass south of the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. NC 86 partitions along Columbia Street northbound and a combination of Cameron Avenue west and Pittsboro Street south through the city center of Chapel Hill. The route parallels I-40 northward to Hillsborough.
North from U.S. 70 and NC 57 at Hillsborough, NC 86 constitutes a rural highway to Prospect Hill, Hightowers and U.S. 158 east of Yanceyville. NC 86 combines with U.S. 158 for 5.3 miles through Yanceyville before bee lining northward to Danville, Virginia.
