Interstate 170 North
A single lane flyover shuttles drivers from I-64/U.S. 40 east onto the northbound beginning of Interstate 170 at Richmond Heights. The directional interchange was constructed during the "The New I-64" project of 2008-09 to replace a parclo interchange. The original junction between the two freeways omitted a direct connection from U.S. 40 east to I-170 north. 05/04/12
The flyovers from I-64/U.S. 40 combine ahead of their merge with the freeway mainline that started from Eager Road. Together, all traffic spans Galleria Parkway, at what was originally a three-quarter diamond interchange. Now a lone on-ramp joins I-170 north from below. 05/04/12
An Interstate 170 shield follows the Galleria Parkway underpass as the first for the 11.17 mile route. 05/04/12
Drivers along Interstate 170 north enter the city of Clayton at the Clayton Road underpass. Two interchanges serve the suburb of 15,939 (2010 census) over the course of one mile. 10/16/04
Forest Park Parkway stems east from the Exit 1E trumpet interchange of Interstate 170 to downtown Clayton and Washington University in St. Louis. The arterial eventually reaches Forest Park in the city of St. Louis. 10/16/04
Interstate 170 enters the northeastern corner of Ladue on the one-quarter mile approach to the Exit 1F folded diamond interchange with Ladue Road. 10/16/04
Exit 1F departs Interstate 170 north for Ladue Road east to Maryland Avenue in Clayton and west across north Ladue to Creve Coeur. Exits 1E and 1F coincide with the same exit numbers southbound while Exits 1A-D are southbound only ramps at Clayton and Richmond Heights. 10/16/04
Interstate 170 traverses the southwest corner of University City ahead of the diamond interchange (Exit 2) with Delmar Boulevard. 10/16/04
Delmar Boulevard leads west from Exit 2 to Price Road in Olivette and east through University City into the West End neighborhood of St. Louis. 10/16/04
Reassurance marker posted ahead of the Old Bonhomme Road overpass. The freeway leaves University City for Olivette at the crossing. 10/16/04
Olive Boulevard (Missouri 340) is the next northbound exit in one half mile. Page Avenue (Highway D) follows in one mile at the city of Overland. 05/04/12
Interstate 170 north expands to four lanes ahead of the Exit 3 ramp departure for Missouri 340 (Olive Boulevard). This interchange was upgraded to a single point urban interchange (SPUI) in 2007. 05/04/12
Exit 3 was expanded to a two lane off-ramp for Missouri 340 during interchange reconstruction. Missouri 340 begins at the intersection of Olive Boulevard and Ferguson Avenue in University City and leads west 19.5 miles through Creve Coeur, Chesterfield and a terminus at Missouri 100 in Ellisville. 10/16/04, 05/04/12
Page Avenue (Highway D) meets Interstate 170 at a diamond interchange in one half mile. A single point urban interchange with Missouri 180 (St. Charles Rock Road) follows at Charlack in 1.5 miles. 10/16/04
Highway D follows all of Page Avenue from Exit 4 west through Overland and Maryland Heights, where the route upgrades to the Missouri 364 (Page Avenue Extension) freeway west to St. Charles. Eastward Highway D continues Page Avenue to Vinita Park, Pagedale, and Wellston to an end at the Covenant Blue-Grand Center section of St. Louis. 10/16/04
Four lanes of Interstate 170 wind northward through Overland and Sycamore Hills to Exit 5 with Missouri 180 (St. Charles Rock Road). Interstate 70 (Exit 7) appears at 2.25 miles out. 10/16/04
Missouri 180 goes for 10.6 miles southeast to the St. Louis city line at Wellston and northwest to end at Interstate 270 in Bridgeton. An older directional interchange (Exits 7ABC) with left side ramps in all directions joins Interstate 170 with its parent in two miles. 10/16/04
Exit 5 leaves Interstate 170 north for Missouri 180 (St. Charles Rock Road) at Charlack and St. John. Missouri 115, a ten mile route paralleling Interstate 70 between Exits 237 and 248A, crosses paths with I-170 at Exit 6 in one mile. 05/04/12
The folded diamond interchange (Exit 6) with Natural Bridge Road (Missouri 115) lines the Bet Ridge and St. John city line along Interstate 170 north. Ramps for Interstate 70 follow, including Exit 7C which joins the westbound freeway ahead of its exit for St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). 10/16/04
Missouri 115 originally continued west from its nearby end at Interstate 70 by St. Louis Lambert International Airport to Bridgeton and into St. Charles. The route was truncated when Missouri 370 was designated on the freeway across the Missouri River in 1993.
Interstate 70, a cross-state route between Kansas City and the Poplar Street Bridge across the Mississippi River, totals 251.7 miles in Missouri presently. 05/04/12
Sign changes made on the half mile approach to Interstate 70 include MUTCD-standard LEFT EXIT tabs for both Exits 7B to St. Charles and Kansas City and 7C for the terminal at STL Airport. Exit 7A parts ways with I-170 from the right to Jennings and downtown St. Louis. 10/16/04, 05/04/12
A centerline exits sign precedes the ramps for Interstate 70 west to Columbia and Kansas City and east to St. Louis and Indianapolis by one quarter mile. The last mainline exits of I-170, beyond I-70, otherwise serve the city of Berkeley. 05/04/12
Drivers bound for Normandy, Northwoods, Jennings or the city of St. Louis part ways with Interstate 170 north for Interstate 70 east at Exit 7A. 05/04/12
Overheads were retained at Exit 7B after the exit tabs were replaced for the westbound ramp to Kansas City. The left side ramp joins the left side of Interstate 70 west ahead of Exit 238A for the airport. 10/16/04, 05/04/12
Passing through the stack interchange with Interstate 70, drivers pass by a shield assembly for I-170 north. 05/04/12
Exit 7C provides access to the right side of the freeway so that drivers do not have to cut across all travel lanes to reach Exit 238A of I-70 west to the STL terminal. 05/04/12
Exit 8 lies a half mile north of Interstate 70 with North Hanley Road. North Hanley Road separates Berkeley to the west with Kinloch to the east near its intersection with Scudder Road and Interstate 170. 10/16/04
A parclo interchange connects Interstate 170 with parallel Hanley Road on the northbound side and with Scudder Road on the southbound side. Scudder Road west ties into James S. McDonnell Boulevard, which meets the end of Airport Road, west of Exit 9A. 10/16/04
Exit 8 loops onto Hanley Road south ahead of Scudder Road and north at 5th Avenue. Most residences surrounding this interchange were razed due to airport expansion. This left a vastly empty street grid on both sides of Scudder Road within the vicinity of Interstate 170. 10/16/04
The final two miles of Interstate 170 see the freeway continue through Berkeley to Interstate 270 at Hazelwood (Exits 10A/B). 10/16/04
Exit 9A leaves for Airport Road next, followed by a left side ramp to the Boeing plant west of I-170 and north of Airport Road. 10/16/04
Airport Road stems east from James S. McDonnell Boulevard and a diamond interchange (Exit 9A) with I-170 to link Berkeley with Ferguson. 10/16/04
Exit 9B connects I-170 north with an access road to the Boeing plant. Motorists taking the ramp by accident can turn around at a cul-de-sac adjacent to the gate. 10/16/04
Interstate 170 passes over a Norfolk Southern Railroad and an unnamed creek ahead of a wye interchange (Exit 9C) with North Hanley Road again near Frost Avenue in Berkeley. 10/16/04
Exit 9C meets Hanley Road south of Frost Avenue and the Hazelwood city line and north of its viaduct above the NS Railroad. One mile remains on I-170 otherwise as the freeway proceeds to a directional stack interchange with Interstate 270 west to Kansas City (via I-70 west) and east to Chicago (via I-55 north). 10/16/04
Interstate 170 partitions into single lane ramps for Interstate 270 east (Exit 10A) to Florissant and Bellefontaine Neighbors and west (Exit 10B) through Hazelwood and Bridgeton in one half mile. 10/16/04
End signage precedes the Interstate 170 conclusion by one quarter mile. 10/16/04
Traffic splits to Interstate 270 west and east as I-170 ends. I-270 west meets Missouri 370 in 5.2 miles for motorists bound for St. Charles or I-70 to Kansas City. Eastbound drivers reach the New Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi in 8.9 miles. 10/16/04
A high flyover carries motorists onto Interstate 270 west from Exit 10A. The interchange between the two freeways was upgraded by 2004 to eliminate left side movements with I-270. 10/16/04
