Interstate 95 South
Interstate 95 & Maine Turnpike shield assembly posted after the trumpet interchange (Exit 109) with U.S. 202 & Maine 11-17-100 (Western Avenue) at Augusta. Although this was the first assembly including the Maine Turnpike, 2004 Legislation extended the turnpike designation northward to Exit 113 and the Maine 3 expressway, allowing heavy trucks to use the freeway in conjunction with Maine 3 as a bypass for Downtown Augusta.1 06/28/05
Maine Turnpike welcome sign posted at the original Augusta Main Toll Plaza site on Interstate 95 south near Howard Hill. 06/28/05
A second shield assembly (removed by 2011) was posted at the Winthrop Road overpass south of the former toll plaza on Interstate 95 (Maine Turnpike). Dynamic signs reduce the speed limits along the turnpike during inclement weather or other traffic disruptions. 06/28/05
The Maine Turnpike is also the Gold Star Memorial Highway. This sign stands south of Litchfield Road near the Hallowell and Farmingdale town line. Similar signage is posted along Interstate 95 northbound. 06/28/05
Approaching the split with Interstate 295 at Exit 103 near Gardiner. Until 2004, I-95 followed the Coastal Route south to Brunswick, Freeport, Yarmouth and Falmouth while the Maine Turnpike carried Interstate 495 southwest to Augusta and Lewiston. Changes resulted in I-295 extending north from Falmouth over the Coastal Route while I-95 shifted to the entire Maine Turnpike mainline for continuity purposes. 06/28/05
Travelers remaining along the Turnpike beyond the split with I-295 commence a 17 mile exit less stretch to Sabattus. Interstate 295 meanwhile sees an interchange with Maine 9 & 126 (Lewiston Road) nearby. Both Interstates are tolled beyond their separation. 06/28/05
Auxiliary guide sign touting the Interstate 295 southbound destination of Freeport. Freeport lies along U.S. 1 adjacent to the freeway at Exit 22. I-295 provides a shorter and more direct route to Portland, but guide signs indicate the Maine Turnpike as the primary route to Maine's largest city. 06/28/05
High Street, west of Gardiner, passes over Interstate 95 a half mile ahead of the wye interchange (Exit 103) with Interstate 295 south. Interstate 295 meets Maine 9 & 126 (Exit 51) just south of the split at the Gardiner Service Plaza. SR 9 & 126 (Lewiston Road) travel east toward Central Street in nearby Gardiner and west parallel to I-95 toward Litchfield and Sabattus. 06/28/05
A two lane off-ramp (Exit 103) carries drivers onto Interstate 295 south into a main line toll plaza preceding Exit 51 to Maine 9 & 126 (Lewiston Road) and the Gardiner Service Plaza. The freeway continues south 22 miles to the Topsham and Brunswick vicinity, 30 miles to Freeport and 41 miles to the Falmouth Spur of the Maine Turnpike (I-495). 06/28/05
