Interstate 91 approaches the Hartford central business district and its multi-level stack interchange with Interstate 84. Departing first are ramps for Exits 32B/A, serving I-84/U.S. 6 west to Waterbury and Trumbell Street south into Downtown. Exit 31 serves State Street west into Downtown and Exit 30 entails a left side off-ramp onto the Bulkeley Bridge (I-84/U.S. 6-44 east) for East Hartford. 08/09/04
The Downtown skyline comes into view as Interstate 91 south nears Exit 32. Exit 32B curves westward into the intersection of Trumbell and Market Streets. Trumbell Street begins there and heads west two blocks to U.S. 44 (Main Street) where it turns southward into Downtown. U.S. 44 merges onto Interstate 84 from Main Street via a split diamond interchange (Exit 50) with Morgan Street to cross the Connecticut River. 08/09/04
Interstate 91 narrows to four lanes briefly as it sandwiches between the Hartford Downtown high rises and the Connecticut River. Ramps from Interstate 84 and Downtown add to the freeway in both directions. Exit 32B/A otherwise diverges from the southbound roadway here for I-84/U.S. 6 west. Interstate 84 doubles as U.S. 6 between Exits 61 at Manchester west and Exit 39A at Farmington. 08/09/04
A parting shot of the Exit 32B/A ramp split between Trumbell Street south and I-84/U.S. 6 west. Traffic destined for U.S. 44 (Main Street) to West Hartford should take Exit 32B. Interstate 84 otherwise continues westward 27 miles to Waterbury and onward from there to Danbury, Newburgh, New York and Scranton, Pennsylvania. 08/09/04
Interstate 91 ascends over I-84/U.S. 6-44 and all but one of the stacked ramps of Exit 32 (the ramp from I-84 east to I-91 north). Exits 31 and 30 leave in unison for State Street west to the Connecticut State Capitol and I-84/U.S. 6-44 eastbound across the Bulkeley Bridge respectively.
Interstate 84 meets the Route 2 freeway in East Hartford beyond the Connecticut River. Route 2 continues east from the Founders Bridge to Colchester and Norwich. I-84 meanwhile turns northeasterly along the Wilbur Cross Highway to Vernon, Tolland and Sturrbridge, Massachusetts. 08/09/04
