One half mile out from the diamond interchange (Exit 42) with MD 17 (Middletown Road) at Myersville. The state route straddles western reaches of Frederick County between Brunswick along the Potomac River. 07/24/04

A pair of freeways tie into Interstate 70 south of downtown Frederick. The first encompasses the cosigned alignment of U.S. 15 & 340 at Exit 52. The second sees U.S. 40 and Interstate 270 interchange with Interstate 70 at Exit 53. Exit 52B entails a cloverleaf ramp onto U.S. 15 north & 340 east for downtown Frederick. The tandem interchange with U.S. 40 and Jefferson Street just east of Interstate 70. There U.S. 340 ends and U.S. 15 turns northward to bypass downtown. U.S. 15 constitutes a four lane divided highway from Frederick northward to Thurmont, Emmitsburg, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. 07/24/04
Interstate 270 begins at the Exit 53 directional interchange southeast of the U.S. 15-40-340 junction. U.S. 40 eastbound merges onto Interstate 70 eastbound from downtown as Interstate 270 begins its journey east to Gaithersburg, Rockville, and the Capital Beltway (Intertate 495). Interstate 270 was originally Interstate 70S. 07/24/04
Interstate 70 U.S. 40 East
Leading away from Interstate 270, four lanes run east to the single point urban interchange (Exit 54) with MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike) and the East Street extension. MD 85 ends at parallel Monocacy Boulevard to the north and to the south of Buckeystown at MD 28. 08/04/13
The SPUI with MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike) opened to traffic on December 14, 2009 after four years of road work. The $107 million project replaced a folded diamond interchange with MD 355 (Urbana Pike) and extended East Street south to MD 85 opposite Monocacy Boulevard as a new gateway to Downtown Frederick. Work was completed in Spring 2010.1 08/04/13
Continuing east, I-70/U.S. 40 meet South Street (Exit 55) and MD 144 (Patrick Street) over the next 1.5 miles. Monocacy Boulevard remains parallel to the freeway east from MD 355 (Market Street) to MD 144 (the former route of U.S. 40). 08/04/13
Widening along I-70/U.S. 40 between MD 85 (Exit 54) and MD 144 (Exit 56) was completed on October 12, 2013. The $45 million, 2.5 year project added a third lane in each direction in addition to auxiliary lanes. The bridges over South Street were replaced and the off-ramp (Exit 55) to South Street was realigned to improve turning movements.2 08/04/13
South Street becomes Reichs Ford south from I-70/U.S. 40 into the rural hills east of the Monocacy River. Northward South Street connects with Franklin Street to MD 144 (Patrick Street) and the Frederick fairgrounds. 08/04/13
MD 144 (Patrick Street) passes over I-70/U.S. 40 east at a parclo interchange (Exit 56). The state route continues along old U.S. 40 across the Monocacy River to become a four lane highway by Bartonsville to Exit 59. 08/04/13
Exit 56 departs I-70/U.S. 40 east to adjacent MD 144 at Quinn Orchard Road. The state route follows Patrick Street northwest to Downtown, serving Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK) via Monocacy Boulevard east. 08/04/13

Interstate 70 overtakes the original four lane alignment of U.S. 40 as MD 144 (Old National Pike) shifts to the north side of the freeway. An on-ramp joins eastbound from MD 144 and Ijamsville Road ahead of this distance sign posted 39 miles from Baltimore. 08/04/13
Six lanes of Interstate 70 parallel MD 144 (Old National Pike) as the freeway approaches New Market and a diamond interchange (Exit 62) with MD 75. 08/04/13
MD 75 dog legs around New Market, turning east at West Baldwin Road to a four lane bypass of the community through Exit 62 to rejoin its old alignment (MD 874 / Old New Market Road) north along Green Valley Road to Libertystown. 08/04/13
MD 75 constitutes a 28.53 mile route from MD 355 near Hyattstown to the south to MD 31 at New Windsor to the north. 08/04/13

I-70/U.S. 40, MD 144 (Old National Pike), a CSX Railroad line and Bush Creek all parallel one another through a valley by Bartholows. 08/04/13
A six-ramp parclo interchange with MD 27 lies four miles ahead at Ridgeville. Baltimore is now a half hour away. 08/04/13
The final rest area along I-70 east was converted for trucks only. 08/04/13
The truck rest area resides next to a 730 foot hill just east of Bill Moxley Road. The car portion of the facility was gated off. 08/04/13
MD 27, a 39.17 mile route from MD 355 at Germantown to MD 30 in Manchester, joins I-70/U.S. 40 with Mount Airy to the north and Damascus to the south. 08/04/13
Exit 68 leaves I-70/U.S. 40 east for a four lane section of MD 27 (Ridge Road). The state route bypasses both Ridgeville and Mount Airy to the east with MD 808 following the former alignment along Main Street. 08/04/13
Interstate 70 nips the southwestern corner of Carroll County at the MD 27 underpass. 08/04/13
The CSX Railroad parallels the north side of Interstate 70 while MD 144 (Old National Pike) shifts back to the south as the freeway lines a valley south of Parrsville. 08/04/13
The first of five interchanges along Interstate 70 east in Howard County lies five miles ahead at Lisbon with MD 94. Baltimore is now 31 miles away. 08/04/13
The 1.61 mile stint through Carroll County concludes as Interstate 70 enters Howard County at the Patapsco River South Branch. 08/04/13
