Routed almost entirely within the Cocoa city limits, SR 524 branches northeast from SR 520 to I-95, SR 501 (Clearlake Road) and the Beachline Expressway. The two lane route travels 4.75 miles overall, ending at Industry Road, 0.441 miles south of SR 528.
Historically, SR 524 represented the original western extent of SR 528. Completed by 1972, SR 528 followed all of what is now SR 524 southwest to SR 520. With subsequent construction of the then-Bee Line Expressway, SR 528 was realigned and SR 524 established.
SR 524 lead directly onto SR 528 east ahead of U.S. 1 and Bennett Causeway (SR A1A) across Indian River Lagoon. This connection was eventually severed, with a portion of the old SR 524 alignment repurposed as the on-ramp to SR 528 east from Industry Road.
