Gunn Highway heads northwest from Carrollwood to Citrus Park, Cosme, Lake Fern and Odessa in the northern Tampa suburbs. County Road 587 overlays the arterial 13.18 miles in Hillsborough County and 1.46 miles north to State Road 54 into Pasco County. The route originates at the folded diamond interchange joining SR 580 and SR 597 at Busch Boulevard and Dale Mabry Highway.
A separate branch of Hillsborough County Road 587 lines West Shore Boulevard in the city of Tampa. Vastly unsigned, the 6.56 mile long route runs south from SR 616 (Spruce Street) at Westshore to Interbay Boulevard and Commerce Street at Port Tampa City.

CR 587 (Gunn Highway) makes an unmarked turn northward at Citrus Park Lane and Citrus Park Drive. Citrus Park Drive west to Westchase is part of CR 589, as is Sheldon Road south from nearby to SR 580 (Hillsborough Avenue) at Town 'n' Country.
