How many locations do you know of where a McDonald's used to be? Aka, "Old McDonald"
That is, the structure was clearly a McDonald's once, but is now either vacant or used as something else. Not counting former shopping center locations, built-into-city-blocks, malls, inside other stores, etc.
Often, the first thing McD's does when closing a store is to remove the signature fluorescent-light highlights from the roof structure, along with taking out the double angle?
Map of locations I've found so far here (https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1npM7aKjKrfQLwc70sx1vEMvZ04C_dhFD&usp=sharing)
Reasons that McD's stores close might include: they built a new stand nearby, changes in traffic patterns make it harder to get to, better proximity to the dinner-hour traffic, etc.
I can only think of two in Minnesota. The first was the one in Centennial Lakes Plaza off of France Ave and 76th St in Edina. That was a late-90s Mac Tonight concept location. My guess is it was too hard to get drive thru customers to come through that location. The other was the location inside the Holiday Center in Duluth which was forced out for building renovations.

That's a particularly good example of before and after, since GSV shows it open not too long ago. Not only did they remove the steeper roof angle, but it looks like they completely replaced the shingles all around.

I remember when Gobbler's had a location in Saginaw. I worked there for a little while before it closed.
Almost all the McDonald's locations I can think of in my area are still being used as McDonald's. There is one though that use to be on Bay Rd. in Saginaw that is now called Woody's Twisters (an ice cream joint). You wouldn't be able to tell that it was a McDonald's because it was one of those classic McDonald's that they built back in the 90's or so that were suppose to look like a McDonald's from the 50's.
Of course there's the Chicago Skyway McDonald's but the building is now gone.

Here in Appleton, WI, on N Richmond St (WI 47) a few blocks east of where I grew up on W Glendale Ave, was an original late 1950s 'Golden Arches' McD's that had outdoor service only into the mid-late 1960s. After a few remodels and expansions, including to a 'classic' multi-pitched roof sit down location, they then built a new restaurant at W Northland Ave (County 'OO'/old US 41) and Richmond St, several blocks to the north, in the late 1970s. The original location was then sold by the franchisee and over time became couple of other local restaurants, each of whom also remodeled and expanded the building into what it is today, called the 'Golden Basket'.

Usually they just renovate the old one, but they must have decided that it was worth it to move closer to the newer, busier part of Webster... aka the part that has other stores and restaurants and not old dilapidated homes and buildings, lol. A new McD's in the village would have felt very out of place and been removed from basically everything else, so that was a smart move IMO.

What is now the Christian Vision Ministries building was originally a McDonalds, although not of the 'Classic' design. It was also the first, and for may years the only, McDonalds in the chain to be closed soley due to a lack of profitability. In the late 1970s, in an attenpt to revitalize the downtown area, Lynn took a cue from Boston's Downton Crossing, and turned part of Union Street, one of their key shopping districts, into a pedestrian mall. The plan was a resounding failure, whith most of the remaining businesses closing up, and the street was reopened to vehicle traffic a few years later. As for the McDonalds, those people who did visit Union Street didn't eat there because of the transients who would come in for a cup of coffee and sit there most of the day. Largely because of this, the restaurant closed about a year after it opened.
By the time the book McDonald's: Behind the Arches was published (1986), the author claimed that the chain had only closed one location due to bad business, and that was due to an early attempt to enter the Texas market. I worked at a McDonald's, and their Crew magazine always featured the employees of one restaurant in front of a closed Burger King location nearby. By the way, the name of the magazine on the small dispenser box was pushed to the far left of the front, cutting the "C" in half. I have to imagine bored employees were writing an "S" in front of the title.

The architecture of that Carson City one is certainly a bit of an oddball as McDonald's go, but it matches the design of the old Kmart and adjacent strip mall across the parking lot. I was wondering if maybe it wasn't even built to McDonald's spec, maybe the shopping center developer built a generic fast food with drive thru building and Ronnie Mac or a franchisee just happened to lease it before Wendy or The Burger King or somebody else got it, but going through real estate records it does look like it was the national McDonald's entity that bought that parcel and built it. McDonald's sold the property in 2017, a few months before that blog article with the photos appeared, but to my knowledge nobody has ever done anything with the building.
There was a former McDo stand in St-Hubert at the corner of Gaétan-Boucher and Payer Boulevards in St-Hubert, a Montreal suburb, who was closed in 1998 because the employees wanted to unionized. The place is now occupy by a Desjardins credit union.

For a time, there was a used-car dealership in Woods Cross, Utah (https://goo.gl/maps/Ct3vg5waiZvyMcheA) that was very clearly an old McDonalds location. The original McD's roof structure was removed, but the old drive-thru and Playplace room were fairly obvious.
That McDonalds moved about a quarter-mile south to a new location on 2600 South, following the reconstruction of that roadway between I-15 and US 89. As you can see on more recent Street View, that used car place has since been demolished and is now just a vacant lot.

I forgot about this one in Lawrenceville, VA. It actually wasn't that old when it closed (opened in the late 1990's or early 2000's). I was shocked especially since the next closest one (or any fast food joint for that matter) is 15 miles away.

There used to be a closed McDonalds near the Cabrini-Green housing project in Chicago. I think it was on Division Street, but maybe not. A neighborhood is pretty pathetic if a McDonald's can not make a go of it there.

I remember seeing that one.
A former McDonald's here in Jackson became a Chinese restaurant. Another former McDonald's later became the site of a Steak & Ale, later a Perkins Family Restaurant, and now a Fuddruckers/Luby's (closed since the pandemic).
I know of only 3 that have closed in the Pittsburgh area, 2 of which moved to new locations.
Penn Avenue in Downtown Pgh closed at the tale end of '19 (https://www.post-gazette.com/business/development/2020/01/16/Mcdonalds-closed-strip-district-pittsburgh-penn-avenue/stories/202001160181) before all this C19 stuff happened. https://goo.gl/maps/AR94JpSR31Unt4BKA
PA-8 in Gibsonia. Old location (https://goo.gl/maps/JNhCDVkAF3sguUMX8), new location (https://goo.gl/maps/QgWfRwZzdbkaXXWc6) just up the road.
PA-356 in Butler. Old location (open) (https://goo.gl/maps/hTXHvGnWZD367A1F6) (closed) (https://goo.gl/maps/pFhyu7Wr4F4fwtpJ8), new location (https://goo.gl/maps/4onyvG8gkPkW62Kq9) just up the road as well.
Weirdly enough, the 2 that relocated both did so to new plazas that had a WalMart go in.
This one, just across the street from ESPN World Headquarters, closed between 2008 and 2011 and has been about 5 different restaurants since, including a place called Red Chili's that used the same font as the more famous national chain known for it's babyback babyback babyback ribs. This small building on Telegraph Road in Redford Township, Michigan was opened as a drive-through-only McDonald's back in the early 1980s. It had signage that identified it as a "Mini-Mac" and I've never seen one like it anywhere else.

I forgot about this one in Lawrenceville, VA. It actually wasn't that old when it closed (opened in the late 1990's or early 2000's). I was shocked especially since the next closest one (or any fast food joint for that matter) is 15 miles away.

Interesting. The spot you linked shows it as it is now, closed, but if you move just once towards the building it goes back to the older SV from when it was still open. The older SV says 2019 on the copyright, but unless the closing was very, very sudden (the parking lot was restriped at some point) it looks to be a bit older as the Food Lion in the background had its logo updated in the interim.

Here's another drive-thru-only McDonald's: Tillicum, Washington, (https://goo.gl/maps/GCArjNRrLFHUHWsf9) just outside Fort Lewis. The later built a full-featured McDonald's next to it and demolished the smaller one.

There was also a Mini Mac in Toledo on Dorr St. near the university. That entire block was razed some time ago as it was swallowed by a new section campus. I also saw one once in the DFW area.
An example of the Mini Mac sign may be found here https://flic.kr/p/wzaf1S (https://flic.kr/p/wzaf1S). GSV indicates that while it still appears to be walk-up and drive-thru only, the sign has since been modified.
There are also a small number of classic-design McD's with only a walk-up window and a drive-thru, such as this one https://flic.kr/p/2ghEdck (https://flic.kr/p/2ghEdck). The locations in Dublin and Gahanna, OH have double drive-thrus, with approaches in opposite directions so you don't have to fumble with a passenger-side window.

It ain't what it was when the first location opened over on Beach Blvd. (US 90) back in 1953 (also the same year the Mathews Bridge not too far from it opened), when it was known as Insta-Burger King.
There was a Burger King that closed here not too long ago. It closed due to the lease expiring and they didn't renew it and this decision was made over a year ago.

We have a number of Burger Kings that closed recently around here, that are all going to be converted to Taco Bells. I'm guessing the franchisee owner is the same for each of them.

One of my local BK's just converted to a Taco Bell as well. Was kinda shocked at the change (well, mainly because I hadn't been past it since before C19). Crazy thing is, it was the only BK I know of locally that had a Coca-Cola Freestyle as well. lol. At least my Wendy's have them (even though I haven't been able to use one in ages due to C19 as well, lol).

The first McDonald's I ever saw just straight-up close without a replacement was the one located at E. 5th Ave. and I-71 in Columbus, Ohio in the early '90s. I remember going in there and seeing that they had done nothing to upgrade the inside since the early to mid '70s. Everything was trimmed in a dark bird's-eye maple and it was quite dour inside during a time when newer McDonald'ses were pink and light gray inside with much brighter lighting. I don't know if it closed due to poor sales on its own or due to the direct connection from I-71 NB to 5th Ave. being removed as a part the construction of I-670 at the time. I'm thinking the former since the timelines don't quite match up.

There are quite a few former McDonald's locations in New York. Some of the more interesting ones:
Whitehall, NY (https://goo.gl/maps/bdQ3nTX66QBCnovb7). Closed in 2015, sat vacant for 4 years until being repurposed as a butcher shop.
Cheektowaga, NY (https://goo.gl/maps/VZTsbFLTPMjpaT2v7). Officially relocated a few miles away. This was an interesting one, because it had a unique playplace (https://goo.gl/maps/KyBknyzhzVxbpa88A) while it was open.
Old Forge, NY (https://goo.gl/maps/6cBfzGHRwHfEnWwo9). Closed after the 2006 season. I specify "season" because this was a seasonal location that was only open for half of the year. There were only a small handful of seasonal locations in the country, with New York being able to claim 2.
Canton, NY (https://goo.gl/maps/HP3GqDyzgwoWhzCQ7). Closed in 2015, may still be vacant. This location was one of the rare remaining standalones with no drive thru.
Until last year, there was a closed McDonald's standing in Lake George (https://goo.gl/maps/iGsyiFQscCiPxMFd6). This location was notable for being seasonal and thus closed 6-7 months of the year. It was also one of the few (if only) standalone locations with a drive thru but no dedicated parking.

For a brief period, Monticello, MN had two McDonalds restaurants. The older of the two (https://goo.gl/maps/x5Lu8xKMogzTVe2x8) is still operational (and was remodeled or maybe even fully rebuilt around the time the second location closed in the mid-2010s). A mile down the road, the newer, c. 2007 McDonalds (https://goo.gl/maps/gHLk17CyFc2gaqQp8)lasted about seven or eight years before it closed down. It's still standing but has no evidence of it ever having been a McDonalds aside from the building design itself. If I had to guess, a combination of a poor location and unsustainable support for two McDonalds in a town of 12,000 had something to do with it failing so soon after opening. It does, however, surprise me that nothing has taken over the vacant building.

Per Sat & StreetView, the distinctive 'Drive Thru' text & arrows are still on the ground. Only McDonald's does it that way. So, that's a little more evidence. Plus the evidence of a split in the line for ordering. Only seen McDonald's do that, sans one Chick-fil-A where I live.

Most of the responses to this thread seem to be of the common '70s/'80s mansard type.
What I find more interesting (and seems to be more in line with the OP's mention of McDonald's stands) are the '50s/'60s walkup type–the ones with one giant arch on each side of the building, a steeply pitched roof, and no indoor seating. These seem to be rather rare, as many of these buildings were apparently demolished and replace on-site with more modern buildings (as McDonald's often does now).
But I do occasionally run into them–I recall noticing one along US 80 in Marshall, Texas (https://goo.gl/maps/8SogQSG8qPsVYrPJ9). Subsequent owners awkwardly added a drive-through window to the side and reconfigured the front to allow a small ordering area inside. The arches were removed many years ago, but small stubs remain in the back of the building, sticking out like stumpy horns.

That's precisely what I referred to upthread-the style of which is hard to find nowadays!
^I hated that kind when I was a kid, though. No playground and had to eat in the car (no cupholders in cars then). There was only one that I know of in my area (North Hamilton Road just south of Broad Street, Columbus Ohio) that got replaced in the late '80s/early '90s with another one on the same site. The "new" one is gone now, too:

From an outsider, this area looks like one of those retail developments from the mid-late 2000s that had grand plans for the retail/restaurants to go bonkers as soon as it was built but then hit the Great Recession and never saw the amount of development they envisioned. You can tell by the amount of grass, curb cuts to nowhere and empty lots in the vicinity. The expectation was that the local economy would be pulled into its orbit. While the big box stores do nearly the amount of business anticipated, much of the rest never came and the older parts of town maintained some importance. There are areas like that near me.

I don't think so. It has the sort of "faux homey" look that pretty much all 1990s and 00s-era banks have in Minnesota.
I happen to be in Hillsboro, Oregon this Labor Day weekend. Here we have the Centro Chiropractic Clinic on Southeast 10th Avenue. You can get Auto Accident Care and Work Injury Care, maybe even at that drive-up window if it's fairly simple.

This is where, perhaps 75 yards down and on the other side of the street, this fine family stands on Neighborhood Watch. Apparently their original home was about 1/2 mile away and they were relocated to this city park.

Most of the responses to this thread seem to be of the common ’70s/’80s mansard type.
What I find more interesting are the ’50s/’60s walkup type—the ones with one giant arch on each side of the building, a steeply pitched roof, and no indoor seating.
There was also a sort of middle phase: larger structure with indoor seating, but with the building adorned in red-and-white tile. I think those were quickly converted to mansards as soon as the standard was established.
Even more rare are a sort of hybrid -- a mansard type, but with the original giant arches still protruding from within the building. I only remember two locations with this design.
- Lanham, MD (https://goo.gl/maps/exHkF1yA9QxL8MhR8) -- near the I-495 Capital Beltway interchange. They had an overhead conveyor belt over the dining area to serve the drive-thru. This location has since been rebuilt with a "classic" look. I wonder if they reused the original giant arches? (Note: the retro elements, at least on the exterior, have since been removed.)
- Newark, DE (listed as Glasgow) (https://goo.gl/maps/JfYE9YjC2XfnbADn8) -- in the median of US-40/Pulaski Hwy, at the intersection with DE-896/Summit Bridge Rd. Since it had those huge golden arches in the building, the fluorescent-light accents were also colored yellow to match. They also had a larger playground structure on the outside, along with a flat roof over outdoor tables. I sometimes thought of that place as sort of a grandiose "Welcome to Delaware" kind of landmark. But alas, in the last few years it was replaced with the new battleship grey structure, the kind that followed the "swoosh" design.

I believe this was a former McDonald's in Highland Heights, KY (may have to have bandit957 confirm this). It looked more like a regular McDonald's about 10 years ago until Klimat built an addition to the north- and back-side of the building.
Or, it could have been an old Hardees. It sort of looks like one of those.
Searcy, AR had an old McDonald's that opened up in the mid 1970's. it closed in late 1991 when the new McDonald's opened up next to the new (at the time) Wal-Mart Supercenter by the 67 freeway. The old McDonald's became a BBQ restaurant for a while, and other places moved in and out. It was razed a couple of years ago and now a Wendy's stands there. Kinda ironic that it got built on the old McDonald's property.
How about a "new" McDonalds with the arches? This was required by local zoning to keep the buildings on the main route into town with 1950's styling.

There was a more modern McD at Military and Shawano Avs in Green Bay. It has a old vintage sign The sign was sufficient to make the decision to tear down the building and build a retro McDonald's there.
A former McDonald's that was converted into a TV station studio (KYOU-TV, Ch. 15), at 820 W. 2nd St, in Ottumwa, IA. From what I've read, this TV station has been in this building since the mid 1980's, or so, when it was still KOIA-TV.

I've never seen a McDonald's close in my area. I've seen Burger Kings close. I saw all the Pizza Huts close. I saw the Ground Rounds close. But no golden arches.
I mentioned the one across from ESPN. Also saw another one (https://goo.gl/maps/rdpCgbm3JtD1Snum7) on US 6 out in Scituate, RI that I used to stop at that was torn down between 2015 and 2016 (according to GSV) and has not been replaced.
I think that was about the time that TV station started in one of the smallest TV markets.

There's a former McDonalds on Huron River Dr in Ypsilanti behind the EMU campus. Kind of an odd place for a McDonalds to begin with as Huron River isn't a major road in that area. It closed back in 2018
The long-standing McDonald's in Hadley, MA was demolished to make way for Trader Joe's. A new franchise opened across MA 9 from its former location.
Our local McDonald's has been around since 1973. It was demolished in 2006 for a newer one, and they built one across the street from I-95. Might as well close the older one right by us.
Here's a location I forgot about, even though I have eaten at the old and new locations. They relocated across the street when the former truck stop was developed into a shopping area. The old store has a distinctive mid-period eyebrow arch, and itself replaced a location next door. The new tenants don't seem as family friendly.

Searcy is one of those weird towns because (among numerous other reasons) Wendy's was always more popular than McD's. The old Wendy's was just down the street on East Race.

How long was it a McDonald's? A year? It looks like it definitely could have been an Eyebrow of Doom-era McD's but there's nothing there in 2012 then by 2014 it's Lover's.

The 'old' location was gone by Oct '08 per GSV (https://maps.app.goo.gl/4SfSMtojwjvEPhBS8), & was last shown in Aug '07 GSV (https://maps.app.goo.gl/4d1XSHBASuSUDbLE7). So, I honestly doubt that other building was ever a McD's.

Still does, unless something changed and Google hasn't been updated. (I think it closed temporarily for remodeling, maybe that's why you think it's a former restaurant?
One that does belong on this list is the one in Wellston, which featured a unique setup where the westbound turnpike onramp from OK-66 went through the parking lot. So you would essentially pay a toll to get into the parking lot, and then get onto I-44 from there. That location has been demolished, though.

Tough to tell from googling, but at a minimum, the whole building isn't a McDonald's anymore.

Where that pond is used to be a McDonald's. It got town down when they moved their corporate office from the building on the right to downtown Chicago.
RIP McDonald's Plaza/Oak Brook HQ. My Dad worked for McDonald's Corporate in the 90s - I spent a scary part of my childhood either in that specific McDonald's, the one inside the old HQ, and at Lake Ed/Lake Fred :(
As I recall,
this was the old HQ (https://maps.app.goo.gl/U6we7UAci6wNXhMj8), which had a McDonald's restaurant inside.
This is what it looks like now. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/7QTp3po4KMh5u2D38)

That's a fair point but it's relative. My local BK was still offering 99¢ Whoppers for most of my college years. I got my worst sticker shock probably in 1989 at a Whataburger being asked to pay more than $6 for a combo.

Thanks for the clarification.
Anyone know if this place on US-30 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/KhRSafPsqCCYhL2VA) in Everett, PA was a McD's at one time? I first noticed it when taking 30 west from Breezewood in lieu of the Turnpike, and thought the architecture looked sort of familiar.

Go back to 2008 and it looks like a Dairy Queen.
Quote from: cl94 on August 30, 2020, 11:33:03 PMThere are quite a few former McDonald's locations in New York.
Now Jreck Subs, IIRC. Canton NY had theirs remodel in 2021.

Another one in Martinsburg WV.
Before move (https://maps.app.goo.gl/kNmehpeF8eovg4S7A), this one was located on Eagle School Road, about a mile from the new one.
After move (https://maps.app.goo.gl/kzj9QuBhx8naSuAbA), this one is now obviously a Dollar Tree, about a year before demolition.

After demo (https://maps.app.goo.gl/BnWGMknmt1a11gfZ8), now as a Dollar Tree.
New location (https://maps.app.goo.gl/AcZd3HvSXfKrD5QD7), built in 2015.
Theres another in Mburg as well
Old one (https://maps.app.goo.gl/wmL496UpgtTqqFiV7), located near I-81.
Fayetteville NC on the bragg has a former one as well, and the irony is that the FIRST golden corral opened next door, alongside with a Wendy's, IHOP, Roy Rogers, and Hardees, all on the same street! :wow:
Old McDonalds (https://maps.app.goo.gl/zeJ1MagZdvRdUAp18)
Old BK (https://maps.app.goo.gl/V9Bo7mUqUReZBc447), now demolished.

Former Applebee's (https://maps.app.goo.gl/d1RdE7Kmf6JFhEqt6), demolished and became Smithfield's Chicken N BBQ. Old location is now closed, and was used for auxiliary purposes.
Former Ruby Tuesday (https://maps.app.goo.gl/wYSibtuVxjzJqZBL9), Now Ay Guey (a spinoff of Mi Cancun)

Not surprised McD's would be almost as reactionary as Walmart in finding new prime locations for stores.
But Burger King lagged massively in Russellville, AR after building a store opposite a Wally World that moved in less than 3 years. At the time there was one McD's, two BKs and one Feltner's Whatta-Burger in Russtown.

I remember the University District McDonald's. There are many, many choices for food there. McDonald's was both kind of on the expensive side compared to what else is around, plus a lot of the people on the ave were looking for more interesting places to eat.
This used car dealership (https://maps.app.goo.gl/qUnc6QQsAuiTgCqSA) in Newark, OH was a McDonald's. The glass enclosure at the front was a PlayPlace (indoor playground). The building has been added on to, but the original building can still be seen sticking out the back (https://maps.app.goo.gl/SYCYn3MeYCokofJh6). It was replaced by a new location on 21st Street when Walmart opened there.
On the other side of town, another used car dealership (https://maps.app.goo.gl/3p2Pis4ZmFA2yMUM7), this one less heavily modified. Its replacement is visible to the north.
In Buckeye Lake, this old McDonald's (https://maps.app.goo.gl/HLY1MFayv8juzAcP9) has been spruced up recently, but for many years it was covered in overgrown vegetation (https://maps.app.goo.gl/NcMLEyM9APMBSGQb8) and still painted in McDonald's colors. Its replacement is to the northwest, in a location that's much more visible from the I-70 exit.
There was a McDonalds at the southeast corner of Clovis Avenue and Ashlan Avenue in Clovis that just underwent a remodel. The building never reopened and was demolished this past week. I'm not sure what happened but all the McDonald's adjacent signage is now gone.

Very unlikely. By 1980 there were over 6,200 McDonald's. Stores come and go. Franchisees go for better locations. Stores in food courts and on toll rosds frequently change. Buildings catch fire or destroyed. Especially in that era, area residents would have no clue of the status of all those thousands of restaurants.
Besides, technically the first McDonalds to open was also the first McDonald's to close - in 1957.
A an unusual 3-story location in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh (https://maps.app.goo.gl/JjriAPjS6dwLk57X8) closed last year. Done in brown brick, this store was arguably something of a local landmark.

The 1986 book
McDonald's: Behind the Arches claimed that only one McDonald's had closed for business reasons, and that was due to a failed early attempt to enter Texas. More have closed since then, but they rarely close due to poor sales.

Usually those seem to be AI generated thumbnails which signal AI generated content with scattershot "facts" that contradict each other. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Darn I went to that McDonald's before, and didn't think much of it to be honest. I didn't think it was a local landmark. Do you know why it closed, though?

^April 2009 is late for a McDonald's to still have an outdoor playground.
