U.S. 101 follows the Bayshore Freeway between San Jose and San Francisco through San Mateo County, following one of the oldest freeways in the San Francisco Bay Area. Portions of the freeway, including a section north of San Francisco International Airport, was constructed on a landfill.

U.S. 101 enters Redwood City. Redwood City incorporated in 1867, and voters adopted the Redwood City charter on April 9, 1929.
