California 59 is a short, north-south state route that begins here at the junction with California 152. Traveling north, California 59 serves El Nido, then enters the city of Merced and follows Snelling Highway from there north to Snelling, where the state highway ends and Merced County J-59 (La Grange Road) begins its northerly journey to La Grange and California 108 west of Sonora-Jamestown. California 33 is a major north-south corridor that connects U.S. 101 in Ventura with Interstate 5 near Tracy/Vernalis. The state route includes much of the original route of former U.S. 399 between Ventura and Taft, and it is also serves the central and western edge of the Central Valley, mostly on a course parallel to Interstate 5 (Westside Highway). About ten miles later, northbound California 33 and westbound California 152 enter the city of Los Banos, at the Crossroads of California. Los Banos is home to 25,869 people as of the 2000 Census and is the second largest city in Merced County.
