  
South Dakota 42, Business Spur I-29, Business Loop I-229
South Dakota 42 stretches in one segment 84 miles between Ethan and the Iowa state line east of Sioux Falls; a second segment of the route exists between Stickney and Aurora/Davison County line. The state highway replaced the original U.S. 16 alignment in 1977 when that designation was relocated to Interstate 90. South Dakota 42's extension from Bridgewater ended the route at South Dakota 38 in Sioux Falls.
Further changes in South Dakota 42 occurred in 1995 when the route replaced all of South Dakota 38 from Interstate 29 east to Iowa. That renumbering occurred with the truncation of South Dakota 38 at Exit 83 (60th Avenue North), leaving South Dakota 42 to follow 12th Avenue North into Sioux Falls from Exit 79. South Dakota 42 follows Business Loop Spur Interstate 29 east to Minnesota Avenue (Business Spur Interstate 90 & South Dakota 115) and Business Loop Interstate 229 east from Minnesota Avenue to Interstate 229 (Exit 6).
Business Spur Interstate 29 follows South Dakota 42 between Interstate 29 and South Dakota 115 (Minnesota Avenue). Business Loop Interstate 229 follows Minnesota Avenue north from Interstate 229 to South Dakota 42 (10th Avenue North), and South Dakota 42 east back to Interstate 229. Business Spur Interstate 90 follows all of South Dakota 115 northward from South Dakota 42 to Interstate 90. Many of the Business Route shields read "Downtown" spur or loop.

All Business Spurs/Loops within the city of Sioux Falls in addition to South Dakota 42 and 115 were turned over to the city from the state in 2006. The jurisdictional shift allows the city to control traffic management of those routes and it is the city's responsibility to remove the state signage. South Dakota currently 42 ends at Ellis Road west of Sioux Falls and resumes at a point on Six Mile Road east of Sioux Falls.1
