SR 266 is an urban route stretching 8.12 miles east from Taylorsville to north Murray, Millcreek and northeast Holladay in the south Salt Lake Valley. The state route follows 4700 South from Interstate 215 along a six-lane commercial boulevard to SR 68 (Redwood Road). Bending northward, 4700 South passes Fore Lakes Golf Course along a four-lane, divided stretch to 4530 South.

East across the Jordan River, SR 68 enters the city of Murray. With six overall lanes along 4500 South, the state route meets Interstate 15 at a single point urban interchange (SPUI). A commercialized intersection joins the route with U.S. 89 (State Street) just east of the freeway.

The suburban boulevard extends east to Millcreek and Big Cottonwood Regional Park with three overall lanes. SR 266 travels through neighborhood areas of Holladay to conclude at I-215 via 4430 South.
