SR 318 branches north from U.S. 93 by Frenchy Lake and Crystal Springs in a remote area of Lincoln County. The state route runs north along the Hiko Range and through Pahranagat Valley to Hiko Narrows. Trending eastward from Fossil Peak and the Seaman Range, SR 318 parallels the dry White River. The two part ways near the Nye County line, and to the southwest of Schell Creek Range.

Following a linear route, SR 318 progresses northward into northeastern Nye County ahead of Gap Mountain and eastern reaches of the broad White River Valley. The state route straddles the western foothills of the Egan Range into White Pine County and the small town of Lead. Angling northwest from there along agricultural areas fed by the White River, SR 318 passes east of Preston. SR 895 links the rural community with SR 318 along a 1.48 mile route. SR 318 extends another six miles from the connector to end at U.S. 6.
