California State Route 46 is a major highway east from the Central Coast to the Central Valley. The route is four lanes wide from U.S. 101 in Paso Robles east to Shandon and within the vicinity of the six-ramp parclo interchange with Interstate 5 at Lost Hills. Long range plans call for expanding more of SR 46 to four lanes.

Beginning near Cambria on the California Central Coast, State Route 46 travels east to Paso Robles, then passes over the Coast Range and crosses the Central Valley along the former U.S. 466 alignment all the way to SR 99. While SR 46 ends at SR 99 in the Central Valley at a point northwest of Bakersfield, historically U.S. 466 continued southeast into Bakersfield, then crossed the Tehachapi Mountains via SR 58. U.S. 466 was decommissioned in favor of SR 46 and SR 58 in 1964.
