Part of the overall Loop 202 beltway system through the East and West valleys, the Santan Freeway travels 24.80 miles between the Maricopa Freeway (I-10) in southern reaches of Phoenix and the Superstition Freeway (U.S. 60) in east Mesa, opposite the Red Mountain Freeway. The urban freeway serves to connect Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa.

Traffic leaves for Exit 51 to McClintock Drive north along Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) east. McClintock Drive forms part of the Chandler and Tempe street grid system, traveling one mile to the west of Loop 101 (Price Freeway).

The high-speed directional interchange (Exit 34A) between Loop 202 and SR 24 overlays a diamond interchange (Exit 34B) with Hawes Road.

SR 24 (Gateway Freeway) spurs one mile southeast to meet Ellsworth Road. Future plans call for an extension of the freeway to Ironwood Road.

Loop 202 north rises over Elliot Road (Exit 33) two miles out from the exchange with U.S. 60 (Superstition Freeway). This section of the Santan Freeway up to Baseline Road (Exit 31) was opened by January 2005.

U.S. 60 (Superstition Freeway) joins Loop 202 with Globe and downtown Phoenix in one mile at the SuperRedTan interchange. The name represents a combination of the three freeways that converge at the exchange.

Baseline Road (Exit 31) parallels the Superstition Freeway (U.S. 60) one half mile to the south throughout its course across the East Valley. The Superstition Freeway serves as the primary freeway for Mesa and Gilbert.

The Superstition Freeway was constructed in stages between 1970 and 1991, and was referenced as SR 360 until 1992 when U.S. 60 was moved onto the freeway.1

The Santan and Red Mountain freeways converge ahead at the SuperRedTan interchange with U.S. 60 (Superstition Freeway). Here traffic departs for U.S. 60 west to downtown Phoenix.

The Red Mountain Freeway continues Loop 202 north through eastern reaches of Mesa and a return west to Tempe and Phoenix as a second ramp leaves for U.S. 60 east to Superior and Globe.
